Is It Worth Buying LEGO to Resell in the Black Friday Sales?

Every November, Black Friday LEGO deals bring out a familiar question in collector circles: is it worth buying extra sets at a discount purely to resell them later? The honest answer is: sometimes, but it's less of a sure thing than it looks from the outside.

The theory

Buy a set at a discount now, hold it sealed, sell it later once it retires and demand pushes the price up. It works because LEGO's retired sets genuinely do rise in value in many cases โ€” the question is whether buying at a Black Friday discount actually improves the odds, or just gets you in at a slightly lower starting point on a bet that was already reasonable.

What tends to make it worthwhile

  • Sets showing genuine signs of retiring soon โ€” reduced availability, age within their theme's typical lifespan, or official retirement announcements.
  • Strong, enduring licensed themes โ€” Star Wars, Harry Potter and similar tend to hold demand for longer after retirement than generic sets.
  • Large, detailed or exclusive builds โ€” the kind of set adult collectors specifically seek out once it's gone.

What tends to make it a poor bet

  • Small, common sets with no strong licence โ€” plenty are made, and plenty stay available for years.
  • Buying purely because of the discount, not the set's actual retirement or demand outlook.
  • Underestimating storage time. A meaningful price rise can take years, not months, and sets need to be kept sealed and in good condition the whole time.
  • Fees and effort when it's time to sell, which eat into the margin more than people expect.

The realistic picture

For a handful of well-chosen sets, buying at a Black Friday discount can work out. As a broad strategy of buying lots of discounted sets and hoping, it's much less reliable โ€” you're competing with plenty of other people doing exactly the same thing, on sets that don't all turn out to be winners.

If you end up with sets to move on
