Once you've got a price and decided to sell, the last little job is packing it up. It's easy, but a couple of small steps stop loose bricks escaping and keep everything safe in transit. Here's how.
What you'll need
- A sturdy cardboard box (a double-walled one if it's heavy)
- A few strong bags — bin bags or large freezer bags
- Packing tape
- Some scrunched paper or similar to fill gaps
You don't need the original LEGO boxes for any of this.
Step by step
- Bag the loose bricks. Tip loose, mixed bricks into strong bags and tie them off. This is the key step — it stops small pieces working their way out of the box and getting lost. Double-bag if a bag looks strained.
- Wrap any built or complete sets. If you're sending assembled models, wrap them in paper or bubble wrap so they don't get crushed. They don't need to be taken apart.
- Protect sealed sets. Anything still factory-sealed is the most valuable — wrap it carefully so the box and seal stay intact.
- Pack it firm. Place bags and wrapped items in the box and fill any gaps with scrunched paper so nothing rattles around.
- Tape it well. Seal all seams with packing tape, especially if the box is heavy — LEGO is denser than it looks.
Mind the weight
LEGO is surprisingly heavy. A box that looks modest can be 15–20 kg, so:
- Don't overfill one giant box — two medium boxes are easier to lift and post than one back-breaker.
- Check the courier's weight limit per parcel.
Sending it
With a buy-back service you'll usually get a prepaid postage label or a home collection, so you just attach the label (or hand it over) — no post-office queue, no paying for postage yourself.
